Shopify Just Made Store-Building Easier. Traffic Is Still the Hard Part.
Shopify's new Canvas AI store builder lowers the technical barrier to launching a store, which makes audience and traffic quality even more important.
Shopify announced Canvas, a new visual workspace where merchants can work with its Sidekick AI agent to build and edit an online store through conversation.
The build barrier keeps shrinking
Shopify says Canvas lets merchants work on the real theme code while seeing changes across the store in real time. That means one traditional startup cost, getting a credible storefront built, can take less specialized labor than it used to.
That does not solve customer acquisition
A polished store is still only infrastructure. It does not create demand, identify a useful audience, or make low-intent traffic valuable. As building gets easier, distribution becomes a larger share of the actual business problem.
The useful experiment is smaller
Instead of treating an AI-built store as a business by itself, test one audience, one offer and one traffic source. Measure what it costs to get a real person to deliberately take the next step. That number is more useful than page views.
