Mystical Dating Is Having a Moment. Here’s How to Keep It Grounded
A survey highlights Gen Z’s interest in manifestation and psychic readings. What the numbers mean—and how to explore without surrendering your judgment.
A tarot reading, a manifestation journal, a horoscope checked before a first date: romantic curiosity can take plenty of forms. A new survey puts numbers behind that interest among younger adults. For consumers, the useful question is how to enjoy the experience while keeping expectations, spending and relationship decisions grounded.
What the 64% figure actually measures
The underlying DatingNews report, published October 6, says 64% of its Gen Z respondents had tried at least one spiritual, psychic or manifestation practice to improve their love lives. Within that group, 29% reported trying manifestation or scripting, 25% consulting a psychic and 19% paying for a spell or love ritual. These categories can overlap. Read the original survey.
Cherry Data Signals conducted the online survey of 1,013 U.S. adults in August 2026. That total covers all ages; the published methodology does not give the Gen Z subgroup’s size or explain weighting. Treat the headline as a finding about these respondents, with limits on how confidently it describes an entire generation.
Crucially, trying something does not establish belief, regular use or effectiveness. The survey records people’s accounts of their experiences. It does not demonstrate that thoughts, readings or rituals caused romantic outcomes.
Curiosity does not require certainty
Independent research helps place the story in context. Pew Research Center surveyed 9,593 U.S. adults in October 2024 and found that 30% consulted astrology, tarot cards or fortune tellers at least annually. Most participants in those activities said they did so primarily for enjoyment. Only 1% of all adults said they relied heavily on these practices when making major decisions. Read Pew’s findings.
Pew asked about different activities, time frames and populations, so its results cannot independently validate the 64% dating figure or establish a recent increase. They do support a distinction that gets lost in dramatic headlines: participation can be playful.
One way to approach the trend is as an invitation to reflection. A symbolic image or imaginative exercise can supply a question to consider. You still decide whether the answer fits your experience.
Turn the ritual into a practical question
If you enjoy manifestation, try writing about qualities you want in a relationship: reliability, affection, shared interests or room for independence. Then translate each quality into something observable. Reliability might mean following through on plans; respect might mean accepting a boundary without bargaining.
With tarot, consider asking, “What am I overlooking about my own expectations?” rather than expecting a card to reveal someone else’s private feelings. Use the image as a writing prompt, and leave room to disagree with your interpretation.
Finish with one action you control: suggest a date, ask about relationship intentions, attend an activity you enjoy or decide that a connection is not meeting your needs. Another person’s interest remains theirs to express freely. A reading should never become permission to keep pursuing someone who has declined, or a reason to dismiss behavior that makes you uncomfortable.
Decide what you are buying before you pay
Before purchasing a reading, personalized illustration or other spiritual entertainment, describe the deliverable in ordinary language. Are you buying artwork, a written interpretation or a timed conversation? Check the total price, delivery terms, refund policy and any recurring charges. Set a spending limit before an emotionally engaging sales pitch begins.
For a romantic portrait or similar imaginative experience, judge the purchase by whether you would enjoy the creative result. A picture cannot establish who your future partner will be, and resemblance to someone you meet is not evidence of compatibility.
Pause if a seller promises a reunion, claims someone is destined for you or insists you must buy additional services to prevent romantic misfortune. Keep your standard for a worthwhile purchase simple: clear terms, an affordable price and entertainment you can enjoy without needing the prediction to come true.
